Dark Skies — Cult-UFO NBC Series

"They're here. They're hostile. And powerful people don't want you to know. History as we know it is a lie."

Created by Bryce Zabel and Brent V. Friedman

The original, classic and definitive "Dark Skies" feels even more relevant today than when it first aired on NBC in the 1990s. Produced for Columbia Television (now Sony/Tristar), the series anchored the network's Saturday night Thrillogy block.

The cult-hit series mixes fact and fiction in a story of the UFO cover-up in the 1960s, based on the idea that John Kennedy was killed because he wanted to disclose the truth about UFOs in his second term. After JFK's death in the pilot episode, the series became a cultural commentary about alienation, political rot, armageddon, and paranoia about accepted history not being true. It's about stacked decks and silent screams and still never giving up.

Out of that vision, Brent and Bryce received the Writers Guild "Created by" credit for "Dark Skies." During its 1995 to 1997 run, it won the Emmy award for its thrilling Main Title sequence, and received a WGA nomination for the pilot episode teleplay.

Another way to re-experience the series is to dive in for the full journey. In that case, we'd recommend the excellent 2011 DVD edition produced and distributed by Shout Factory! This is something you should definitely own in order to obtain the full immersive storyline. It has everything — alternate versions of the pilot, documentaries, easter eggs. It's one of the best DVD compilations of a series ever produced in the estimation of several of the reviewers.

Dark Skies — starter interview

This was recorded during the release of the Dark Skies DVD set. This is actually one of my favorite interviews about my NBC UFO series, and sets the stage nicely for people who have never even heard of it.

Dark Skies — Documentary — History Is a Lie

One of the greatest things about the Dark Skies DVD set is the sheer attention to detail that Shout Factory took in getting it "just right." This documentary done by Brian Ward is just insanely great!

DARK SKIES — DOCUMENTARY — PARANOIA STRIKES DEEP

Here is the second taste of the documentary from the Dark Skies DVD set. Together, these two clips are so great but they represent less than half of what's in the actual documentary.
